SHOWCASING BLACK TRADITIONS

PEACE BASKETS
Peace Baskets are traditionally a basket with a tall pyramid shaped lid. Originally, they started as a symbol of harvest and plentiful food. After the 1994 Rwanda genocide, these baskets took on a new meaning of peace and unity. In an effort for reconciliation, Rwanda women formed artisan collectives using the traditions of basket weaving passed from mother to daughter for generations. Zig Zag patterns are often incorporated into the design representing 2 women holding hands.

COIL BASKETS
Coil style weaving is passed down from mother to daughter generation to generation. Originally woven by binding stalks of cattail grass with long strips of reed. These materials were grown locally but the reed strips were hard on the hands of the weavers. Around 20 years ago, the weavers were able to replace these reeds with local recycled polymer twine proving to be easier on the hands of the artisans. .
